Moolah Rogue!

My father is a businessman, and may I say that he earns enough to give us a little more than a comfortable lifestyle. Yet, all through my growing up years he made me believe that there is nothing fabulous or even remotely good about having money. He kept telling me that professions that are more noble, a teacher, a doctor, an artist or a writer, you earn respect. And that earning is more valuable than any amount of money. So, all through my childhood I thought that my father had the worst job in the world. Only money. What was it any good?!

Then I grew up, went to college, made friends - “Your father is a businessman. Wow!” (I found nothing ‘wow’ about it, because I never got any extra money to splurge. I want through the usual students’ routine of saving up through the month, sometimes cutting down on my outings to buy things I really fancied.) I also remember an atrocious, one-time acquaintance recount her break-up story to me. “Oh come on, it was never meant to be”, she said, “He works in a bank and my father is a surgeon!!” I was suddenly being exposed to a whole new way of thinking; something I was completely unfamiliar with. Had my father fooled me all this while? Is money the only important thing in life? Could it also buy enviable kilograms of respect?

Today as I keep my increment letter in front of me and read it over and over again, I really want to believe that my father was right. Money is not everything after all! It’s the respect you earn from a noble profession that matters. Like that of a teacher, a doctor, an artist or a WRITER!!

Pencil on Paper

Have not touched the sketch book for nearly two years now. But here are some pieces very close to my heart.

I have nothing to say
But I want to hear
I have nothing to lose
But I want you to choose
I have nothing to fear
But I won’t lay myself bare

Things you don’t know about me.

The very first chapter of my first grade Radiant Reader was called “Late Kate”. Daddy dearest felt then, that I personify it. Today I know I do. I am a shamefully self-confessed, last-minute-person.

•I am an idealist. At times to the extent of being stupidly so.

I used to be an atheist once. Now, there is room for debate. I take after my dad in that sense. He once threw away my mother’s make-shift puja ghar simply because he thought it was obstructing the white-wash proceedings!! That said, my old man is a million times better, nobler and kinder than many god-fearing fools.

I look like a wild-child but I am happily old-school. I will think a hundred times before being ‘interesting’. Wink Wink. And yet, if something feels right in my heart, I am far from traditional.

•I am like a puppy to the people I love. All they’ll need to do is show me some love. My tail will wag for them forever.

• I hate to admit that on the inside I am a hopeless romantic.

• I once shouted at my boyfriend and asked him to grow up, 'coz he lovingly offered to buy me flowers. I was 19 then. (Though I gifted a teddy, to his utter embarrassment, and thought that was normal!)

• A Jyotish once told me that I will have an extra-marital affair at 52. Yippiee!

• Bravery attracts me.

• I am quite a toughie. I don’t cry easily. Only a good book, a touching movie, dogs (cute, ugly, ferocious or tiny) and babies can break me.

• One day I want to make enough money, so I can pack my bags and travel the world for the rest of my life.

• I have an ego larger than two-times ME. I WILL apologize when I am in the wrong. Unfortunately, I expect the same. (so...is that ego or dignity?)

• My biggest fear – Loneliness.

• I get special day blues. Which is why, I have not celebrated my birthday for 3 years now. I don’t want to confront the fact that there is a possibility of it being any less special. So I run away…

• I have always wished to travel back in time. Very seriously.

• I am capable of being as cold as ice and not look back (and I have too much patience for my own good).

• I love musicals.

Weighty Issues

It all began last year. The world was crumbling before my eyes. The earth below was threatening to tear apart and pull me in. It indeed was one of the worst calamities to have hit the 21st century. I had gained weight! I hated my mirror for making me feel like a worm. And a plump one at that. This had to change, I told myself. After all, I had joined a new organization and in many ways it was a new phase in my life. I swore to myself that I will get back to sexy 54. But then something happened. Actually two. My boss, Avinash Rebello, an owl reincarnate. And Madira. My hostel had a dinner deadline of 9:30, and thanks to Avi we never left early. So invariably dinners were at Mads. Was the food edible? Many would say otherwise, but my faithless tongue took a fancy to their oil dripping chicken afghanis, lolly pops, chilly dries and the works. And of course I started storing them. In my stomach, hands, thighs and waist. To make matters worse my male buddies in office started treating me like I was one of them. A boy!!! SFX: Glass breaking into pieces. Somewhere in the background a bubble burst. What did you miss guys? My ass or my tits? Did they really get lost in the flab? Anxiety galore. But I smiled and tried to look cool. However, I decided to go on a diet; and I credit myself for following it religiously for three days. I gave it up by lunchtime on the fourth. It was Owl though, who gave me the first push. He showed me the way to the gym. I followed him, determined that this time I would pull it through. But I forgot to mention a characteristic trait in me. I get bored easily. So as expected, a few months of heartless work-outs and not even a gram of weight-loss later, I called it quits. Owl, in the meantime, lost some 700 kilos and flew away to Bangalore. But last week, someone up above had mercy. The weighing scale tipped!! By exactly 2.5 kilograms. And the best part, some people even took notice. :) Not too much of an outcome in one year and three months, by lets be positive. At least it’s a nice start towards a hot me…

...

Those who find themselves in the midst of solitude and loneliness make for good writers, they say...
I quite like the way i have been writing lately.
